The Bagua Map Explained: 9 Areas of Your Home
Key Takeaways
The Bagua is an eight-sided energy map that divides any space into nine life areas: Wealth (SE), Fame (S), Relationships (SW), Family (E), Health (center), Creativity & Children (W), Knowledge (NE), Career (N), and Helpful People (NW). Classical feng shui orients the Bagua by compass direction; Black Hat feng shui aligns it to the front door. Laying the Bagua over your floor plan lets you make targeted adjustments to specific life areas.

The Bagua (八卦, literally "eight symbols") is the energy map at the heart of feng shui. It divides any space — a home, a room, a desk — into nine zones, each governing a specific area of life. When you lay the Bagua over your floor plan, you can see which parts of your space correspond to wealth, relationships, career, health, and more. This lets you make targeted adjustments rather than guessing.
What the Bagua Actually Is
The Bagua is rooted in the I Ching (Book of Changes), one of the oldest Chinese texts. Its eight trigrams represent the fundamental forces of nature: Heaven, Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, Mountain, Lake, and Thunder. In feng shui, these eight forces plus a central zone create nine life areas, each associated with an element, a direction, a color, and a set of life themes.
How to Lay the Bagua Over Your Home
There are two main methods:
Classical (Compass) Method: The Bagua is oriented by actual compass direction. Wealth is always in the southeast, Career in the north, and so on. This is the method I practice because it reflects the real energetic orientation of your space.
Black Hat Method: The Bagua is aligned to the front door. The wall containing your front door becomes the bottom row (Knowledge, Career, Helpful People), and the far wall becomes the top row (Wealth, Fame, Relationships). This method is simpler but less personalized.
Either way, divide your floor plan into a 3×3 grid. If your home is not a perfect square or rectangle, some areas may be "missing" or "extended" — which itself carries feng shui meaning.
The Nine Areas of the Bagua
1. Wealth & Prosperity (Southeast)
Governs abundance, money flow, and gratitude. The element is Wood; the colors are purple, green, and gold. Enhancements: healthy plants, water features, purple accents, items that represent abundance to you personally. The far-left corner from your front door (in Black Hat) is the classic "wealth corner" most people have heard about.
2. Fame & Reputation (South)
Governs how you are seen, your reputation, and recognition. The element is Fire; the color is red. Enhancements: candles, lighting, awards, certificates, art that represents fire or your aspirations. This area supports how the world perceives you.
3. Love & Relationships (Southwest)
Governs romantic partnership, close friendships, and self-love. The element is Earth; the colors are pink, red, and white. Enhancements: pairs of objects (two candles, two plants, matching nightstands), romantic art, rose quartz. If you're single and seeking partnership, this is where to focus.
4. Family & Ancestors (East)
Governs family harmony, health of family members, and ancestral connections. The element is Wood; the colors are green and blue. Enhancements: family photos, healthy plants, heirlooms, items made of wood. This area supports the roots of your life.
5. Health & Center (Tai Chi)
The center of the Bagua governs overall health and the unity of all life areas. The element is Earth; the colors are yellow and earth tones. Enhancements: earth-tone decor, ceramics, crystals, keeping this area open and uncluttered. Because it's the center, it affects every other area.
6. Creativity & Children (West)
Governs creativity, projects, children, and playfulness. The element is Metal; the colors are white and metallic. Enhancements: art supplies, children's art, metal objects, creative projects in progress. This is the zone for anything you're bringing into the world.
7. Knowledge & Self-Cultivation (Northeast)
Governs wisdom, learning, meditation, and personal growth. The element is Earth; the colors are black, blue, and green. Enhancements: books, a meditation corner, a journal, items that inspire introspection. This is where self-improvement lives.
8. Career & Life Path (North)
Governs your career, life direction, and the flow of opportunity. The element is Water; the colors are black and dark blue. Enhancements: water features, mirrors, images of water or your career path, keeping the entry clear. This area is directly connected to the front door.
9. Helpful People & Travel (Northwest)
Governs mentors, clients, benefactors, and travel. The element is Metal; the colors are white, gray, and metallic. Enhancements: images of mentors or guides, travel photos, metal objects, guest accommodations. This area supports the people who help you move forward.
Missing and Extended Areas
If your home has an L-shape or irregular footprint, some Bagua areas may be incomplete (missing) or protruding (extended). A missing area in Wealth doesn't mean you'll be poor — but it suggests that area of life needs more conscious attention. You can "complete" a missing area energetically with landscaping, lighting, or a structure on the property.
How to Use the Bagua Practically
Don't try to enhance all nine areas at once. Identify one or two life areas that feel stuck or that you want to grow. Look at that zone in your home. Is it cluttered? Dark? Used for storage? Clean it, bring in the appropriate element and color, and add something intentional. Then observe what shifts over the following weeks.
The Bagua is a diagnostic tool, not a magic spell. It shows you where your space is supporting you and where it isn't. For a full Bagua analysis of your home, book a consultation — I work with clients in Utah and worldwide via video.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the feng shui Bagua map?+
The Bagua is an eight-sided energy map used in feng shui that divides any space into nine zones, each governing a life area: Wealth, Fame, Relationships, Family, Health, Creativity, Knowledge, Career, and Helpful People. You overlay it on your floor plan to identify which parts of your home correspond to which areas of your life.
Where is the wealth corner in feng shui?+
In Classical (Compass) feng shui, the wealth area is in the southeast corner of your home. In Black Hat feng shui, it is the far-left corner from your front door. Enhance it with healthy plants, water features, purple accents, or items that represent abundance to you.
How do I map the Bagua onto my home?+
Divide your floor plan into a 3×3 grid. In the Classical method, orient the grid by compass direction (Wealth = southeast, Career = north). In the Black Hat method, align the bottom row to the wall with your front door. Each of the nine squares corresponds to one life area.
What does it mean if a Bagua area is missing from my home?+
A missing Bagua area (common in L-shaped homes) suggests that life area needs more conscious attention. It doesn't guarantee problems, but it indicates where energy may be weak. You can energetically complete a missing area with landscaping, outdoor lighting, or a small structure on the property.
