What Is Shamanic Healing? A Beginner's Guide

Autumn Moon
Practitioner & Guide
Shamanism is not a religion. It is a set of tools and practices that have been used by indigenous cultures around the world for over 40,000 years. It is the oldest spiritual practice on Earth. At its core, shamanic healing is about restoring wholeness to the soul and harmony to the individual's relationship with the natural and spiritual worlds.
The Shamanic Perspective on Illness
In the shamanic view, illness—whether physical, emotional, or spiritual—often stems from a loss of power or a loss of a part of the soul. This can happen through trauma, grief, or prolonged stress. A shamanic practitioner works to identify these energetic imbalances and bring the missing pieces back into the client's field.
Core Practices
Soul Retrieval: Returning parts of the self that were "lost" or pushed away during traumatic events. This can lead to a profound sense of "coming home" to yourself.
Power Animal Retrieval: Connecting you with a spiritual ally in animal form that provides protection, strength, and specific wisdom for your current path.
Extraction: Removing energetic "intrusions" or heavy energies that don't belong to you but have become lodged in your field.
Illumination: Clearing the imprints of trauma from the Luminous Energy Field (LEF) before they manifest as physical or emotional illness.
What to Expect in a Session
Unlike a Reiki session where the energy is channeled through the hands, a shamanic session often involves more active tools—rattles, drums, feathers, or sacred stones (Kuyas). The practitioner may enter a light trance state to "journey" on your behalf, seeking information or healing from the spirit world.
You may be asked to participate in simple rituals or visualizations. The goal is to move the energy that has become stagnant and to re-establish your connection to your own inner power.
Is It Right for You?
Shamanic healing is especially effective for those who feel "stuck" despite doing years of traditional therapy, or for those who feel a deep, unexplainable sense of disconnection from themselves or the world around them.
It is a path of direct experience. You don't need to believe in anything specific; you only need to be open to the possibility that there is more to your world than what you can see with your physical eyes.
