Space Clearing: How to Clear Stagnant Energy from Your Home

Practitioner & Guide
Space clearing is one of the most powerful and immediate feng shui techniques you can practice. It's the process of removing stagnant, heavy, or old energy from a space and replacing it with fresh, vibrant chi. Even a beautifully decorated, clutter-free home can hold stale energy — especially after illness, conflict, a life transition, or simply the accumulation of daily stress over time.
When to Clear Your Space
You don't need to wait for a special occasion. Space clearing is beneficial at these times:
After illness: When someone in the home has been sick, the space holds the energy of illness. Clear it after recovery.
After conflict or a breakup: Arguments, tension, and emotional upheaval leave energetic residue. Clear it to reset.
After moving in: A new home holds the energy of previous occupants. Clear it before you fully settle in.
After a major life transition: Job change, divorce, loss, or any significant shift. Clear the old to make room for the new. See Feng Shui After Life Transitions.
Seasonally: A clearing at each season change keeps energy fresh and aligned with the natural cycle.
When a space feels heavy: Trust your intuition. If a room feels stuffy, heavy, or "off" even when it's clean, it needs clearing.
Step 1: Declutter First
Space clearing on top of clutter is like opening a window in a room full of trash — you're just moving the smell around. Before any clearing technique, declutter. Remove broken items, things you're tolerating, and anything that carries negative associations. Clutter is stagnant (si) chi; you must remove the source of stagnation before clearing the energy around it.
Step 2: Clean Physically
Dust, dirt, and grime are physical manifestations of stagnant energy. Clean the space thoroughly — floors, surfaces, windows, and corners. Open all windows to let fresh air circulate. Physical cleaning is itself a form of space clearing; the two work together.
Step 3: Choose Your Clearing Method
There are several effective space clearing techniques. Use one or combine several — the intention behind the clearing matters as much as the technique.
Sound Clearing
Sound breaks up stagnant energy quickly and effectively. Walk through each room clapping loudly into corners (where energy collects), ring a bell or singing bowl, or play a drum. Start at the front door and move clockwise through the home. The vibration of sound shatters stuck energy and gets chi moving again.
Smoke Clearing (Smudging)
Burning sage (white sage or desert sage), palo santo, or incense releases smoke that clears heavy energy. Light the sage, let it smoke (not flame), and walk clockwise through each room, directing smoke into corners, closets, and dark areas. Open windows so the old energy has a way out. Set your intention before you begin — the smoke carries your intention as well as its clearing properties.
Note: If you're sensitive to smoke, use a smokeless alternative — essential oil sprays (sage, cedar, or lavender in water) work similarly.
Salt Clearing
Salt absorbs negative energy. Place small bowls of sea salt in corners of a room, especially in areas that feel heavy. Leave them for 24-48 hours, then discard the salt (don't reuse it — it's absorbed the old energy). This is a gentle, passive clearing method that works well while you're away from home.
Light and Air
Sometimes the simplest clearing is the most effective. Open every window and door. Let sunlight pour in. Let wind move through the space. Fresh air and natural light are the most basic forms of sheng chi (vital energy). Do this for at least 30 minutes.
Step 4: Set Your Intention
Before you begin clearing, pause and set a clear intention. What do you want to release? What do you want to invite in? This could be: "I release the energy of illness from this space" or "I clear the old relationship energy and invite fresh, new energy." The intention directs the clearing. Without it, you're just burning sage. With it, you're performing a deliberate energetic reset.
Step 5: Invite Fresh Energy In
After clearing, don't leave the space empty. Fill it with fresh, positive energy:
Bring in living plants — the single best way to introduce vibrant chi.
Open windows and let fresh air circulate.
Play uplifting music or ring a bell to set a new tone.
Light a candle to introduce Fire energy and warmth.
Add something new — fresh flowers, a new piece of art, or a rearranged element. This signals a fresh start.
Maintaining Clear Energy
Space clearing is not a one-time event. Energy accumulates daily. To maintain clear energy:
Keep the space clean and clutter-free. Daily tidying prevents stagnation from building up.
Open windows daily — even for 10 minutes. Fresh air is the simplest chi refresh.
Keep plants healthy and remove any that are dying.
Fix broken items promptly. Broken things hold stagnant energy.
Clear after any conflict or illness. Don't let heavy energy linger.
Space Clearing vs. Feng Shui Adjustments
Space clearing removes old energy; feng shui adjustments (like the Five Elements, Bagua, and commanding position) redirect and balance the new energy. Clear first, then adjust. Think of it as cleaning the canvas before painting.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is space clearing in feng shui?+
Space clearing is the process of removing stagnant, heavy, or old energy from a space and replacing it with fresh, vital chi. Techniques include sound (clapping, bells), smoke (sage, palo santo), salt, and fresh air. Space clearing is done after decluttering and cleaning, and should be followed by inviting fresh energy in through plants, light, and intention.
How often should I clear the energy in my home?+
Clear your space at least seasonally, and additionally after illness, conflict, a breakup, moving in, or any major life transition. You should also clear whenever a room feels heavy or 'off' even when it's clean. Daily maintenance — opening windows, keeping plants healthy, and tidying — prevents stagnant energy from building up between clearings.
What is the best way to clear stagnant energy?+
The most effective approach combines methods: first declutter and clean physically, then use sound (clapping into corners, ringing a bell) to break up stuck energy, followed by smoke (sage or palo santo) to clear heavy energy, and finish by opening windows to let fresh air in. Set a clear intention before you begin — the intention directs the clearing.
Do I need to declutter before space clearing?+
Yes. Space clearing on top of clutter is ineffective because clutter is the source of stagnant energy. You must remove the clutter first, then clean the space physically, and only then perform the energetic clearing. Think of it as removing the source of the problem before treating the symptoms.
What should I do after clearing my space?+
After clearing, invite fresh energy in. Bring in healthy living plants, open windows for fresh air, light a candle, play uplifting music, and add something new to the space — fresh flowers or a new piece of decor. This fills the cleared space with positive energy rather than leaving it empty for old energy to return.
