Feng Shui Cures & Remedies: How to Fix Energy Problems in Your Home

    Key Takeaways

Feng shui cures (remedies) fix energy imbalances. The five main types are: element cures (adding Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water to balance a sector), repositioning (moving furniture into the commanding position), space clearing (removing stagnant chi with sound, smoke, or light), symbolic cures (mirrors, crystals, plants), and directional cures (using your Kua Number). Match the cure to the specific problem rather than applying generic fixes.

    Practitioner & Guide

A feng shui cure (also called a remedy or adjustment) is a specific change you make to correct an energy imbalance in your space. Not every space is perfect — most homes have at least a few feng shui challenges, whether from architecture, layout, or the annual Flying Stars. Cures are how you work with those challenges instead of against them.

The Five Types of Feng Shui Cures

    1. Element Cures

The most common and powerful type of cure. Element cures use the Five Elements generating and controlling cycles to strengthen or weaken energy in a sector. For example:

    • If a Water star is too strong in your bedroom (causing restlessness), add Earth elements (Earth dams Water in the controlling cycle) — terracotta pots, yellow tones, ceramic objects.

    • If you want to activate wealth (Earth element in Period 9), add Fire elements (Fire generates Earth) — red accents, candles, good lighting.

    • If the Five Yellow (Earth) star lands in a key room, add Metal elements (Metal drains Earth) — metal objects, white/gray colors, metal wind chimes.

    2. Color Cures

Color is the fastest element cure. Because each color belongs to an element, changing the color of a room or adding colored accents instantly shifts the elemental balance. Color cures are ideal when you can't move furniture or change architecture.

    3. Object/Symbol Cures

Specific objects carry specific feng shui meanings and energies. Common object cures include:

    • Mirrors: Expand space, redirect energy, and "double" auspicious views. See Feng Shui Mirrors: The Complete Guide.

    • Crystals: Earth element cures that stabilize and ground energy. Crystal spheres placed in the center of the home support overall harmony.

    • Plants: Living Wood energy that activates growth. See Feng Shui Plants.

    • Water features: Activate wealth and career energy. Fountains in the wealth or career area keep chi flowing and fresh.

    • Wind chimes: Metal chimes weaken negative Earth energy; bamboo chimes add Wood energy. Use near the front door or in afflicted sectors.

    4. Structural/Placement Cures

These involve moving furniture or adjusting layout rather than adding objects. The most important is the commanding position — placing your bed, desk, and stove in the position of power. Other structural cures include:

    • Moving the bed so it's not directly in line with the door

    • Repositioning a desk to face your Sheng Chi direction

    • Clearing the pathway from the front door so chi can enter freely

    • Closing bathroom doors and keeping toilet lids down to prevent energy drain

    5. Space Clearing Cures

Sometimes the problem isn't the layout — it's stagnant or negative energy that has accumulated. Space clearing removes old energy and invites fresh chi. Techniques include smudging (sage or palo santo), sound clearing (bells, clapping, singing bowls), and intentional cleaning. Space clearing is especially important after arguments, illness, or moving into a previously occupied home.

Common Feng Shui Problems and Their Cures

Problem: Front door directly faces a window or back door

Chi enters and exits too quickly — energy doesn't stay long enough to nourish the home. Cure: Place a rug, plant, or screen between the front door and the exit point to slow the energy. A round table with a plant or crystal in the center also helps chi linger.

Problem: Beam overhead (especially over the bed or desk)

Overhead beams create pressing, oppressive energy that can cause headaches, stress, or a sense of burden. Cure: Move the bed or desk out from under the beam. If that's impossible, paint the beam the same color as the ceiling to minimize its visual weight, or hang two bamboo flutes at 45-degree angles on the beam to redirect the pressing energy.

Problem: Bathroom in the wealth or health area

Bathrooms drain energy — if one sits in a key life area, that area's energy is weakened. Cure: Keep the bathroom door closed, keep the toilet lid down, add a mirror on the outside of the bathroom door (to "reflect" energy back), and place a plant inside to absorb draining energy. Problem: Staircase directly faces the front door

Energy rushes either up or down the stairs, creating instability. Cure: Place a plant, screen, or rug at the base of the stairs to slow the energy. If chi rushes down the stairs toward the door, hang a crystal or wind chime between the door and the stairs to slow it.

Problem: Sharp angle (poison arrow) pointing at the bed or desk

Sharp angles from furniture, walls, or architectural features create sha chi (attacking energy). Cure: Soften the angle with a plant, fabric, or rounded object. Reposition the bed or desk so the angle doesn't point directly at you. A crystal sphere can also diffuse the sharp energy.

    Problem: Clutter

Clutter is the most common feng shui problem and the simplest to fix. It creates si chi (stagnant energy) and blocks chi from flowing. Cure: Declutter systematically. Start with the entryway, then the bedroom, then the kitchen. Remove anything broken, unused, or carrying negative associations.

When to Apply Cures vs. When to Move

Most feng shui problems can be cured. But some challenges are structural and difficult to fix without renovation — a bathroom in the exact center of the home, a bedroom with no commanding position possible, or a front door facing a T-junction. In these cases, cures help manage the energy, but if you're choosing a new home, it's better to start with a space that doesn't have major feng shui flaws.

This is why I recommend a feng shui consultation before you buy or rent — it's much easier to choose the right space than to cure a problematic one.

    The Intention Behind the Cure

In Classical Feng Shui, the cure works because of the elemental and energetic principles — not because of belief. However, the intention you bring matters. When you place a cure, take a moment to set a clear intention for what you want to shift. This isn't superstition — it's focus. When you're clear about what you want to change, you notice opportunities and take actions aligned with that intention. The cure supports the energy; your intention directs it.

Not sure which cures your home needs? Book a consultation and I'll identify the specific energy imbalances in your space and prescribe the exact cures — element, color, object, or structural — to fix them.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is a feng shui cure?+

A feng shui cure (or remedy/adjustment) is a specific change you make to correct an energy imbalance in your space. There are five types: element cures (using the Five Elements cycles), color cures, object cures (mirrors, crystals, plants, water features), structural cures (furniture placement), and space clearing cures (smudging, sound, cleaning).

What is the most powerful feng shui cure?+

Element cures are the most powerful because they work with the fundamental Five Elements generating and controlling cycles. For example, adding Metal to weaken a negative Earth star, or adding Fire to strengthen an Earth wealth star. The specific cure depends on your home's Flying Stars chart and the specific imbalance present.

Do feng shui cures really work?+

Feng shui cures work by adjusting the elemental balance and energy flow in your space based on classical principles. The element cures (using the generating and controlling cycles) are based on observable energetic relationships. The effectiveness depends on correct diagnosis — identifying the actual imbalance and applying the correct cure, which is why a professional consultation is valuable.

How do I cure a bathroom in the wealth area?+

Keep the bathroom door closed, keep the toilet lid down, place a mirror on the outside of the bathroom door to reflect energy back, add a plant inside the bathroom to absorb draining energy, and ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated and clean. These cures help prevent wealth energy from being flushed away.

Can clutter be cured with feng shui objects?+

No. Clutter creates stagnant energy (si chi) that blocks all other cures from working. The cure for clutter is removal — decluttering is the foundation that must happen before any other feng shui cure can be effective. Start with the entryway, then the bedroom, then the kitchen.
